Day 01. Surabaya (airport/hotel) – Madakaripura waterfalls - visit locals - Cemara Lawang

Your driver picks you up at your hotel or at Juanda International Airport Surabaya. In about 4 hours you arrive at the Hindu village named Cemara Lawang. When you arrive in the morning in Surabaya, you will have time to visit the Madakaripura Waterfalls first, before heading to Cemara Lawang (when it isn't raining). This village is situated at the edge of the ancient caldera in which Bromo resides. If it isn't dark yet, discover village life and visit local people. Walk around, communicate and feel free. The sunset is beautiful just outside of the village, sitting at the edge of the ancient crater rim.
You will spend the night in a hotel near the active volcano Bromo.

Day 02. Mt Bromo sunrise tour (King Kong Hill) – Ijen

It will be early morning... Have a cup of coffee or tea at 03.00 am in the morning to wake up before you leave for a short drive to Pananjakan. It is only a 150 m walk to the view point Mt. Pananjakan. The top of this mountain is the highest viewpoint in the area from where you can see the sunrise. Just below Mt. Pananjakan, you will find King Kong Hill, also with beautiful views. If Mt. Pananjakan is too crowded, you can see the sunrise at King Kong Hill. Keep in mind that weather conditions determine the view and the beauty of the sunrise.
After the sun has risen, you will drive to the Sea of Sand that partly surrounds Mt. Bromo. Just ask the driver to stop if you wish to get out of the car and would like to walk. Otherwise he will bring you as close to Mt. Bromo as possible. When the driver parks it is a 45 minutes walk to the crater. Enjoy the walk and the views as you find yourself in a moonlike landscape with wondrous views.
Once back at your Jeep, the driver will bring you back to your hotel to have breakfast. After a short break you will have to check out and continue your tour to the Ijen Plateau. You can have lunch at Pasir Putih beach (not included) and stretch your legs. You are a half way to Sempol or Bondowoso.

Note: you can choose where you would like to spend the night. At Sempol at the Ijen Plateau you will find a basic homestay. You can enjoy the Ijen Plateau before you rest in your hotel; if you like. At Bondowoso you will have a more luxurious hotel.

Day 03. Explore the Ijen Plateau

After breakfast you can explore the area around the villages Blawan and Sempol and visit for example the strawberry garden and the coffee plantation, strawberry and macadamia nuts home industry when it is season, waterfalls and the coffee factory. After a day of exploring, relax in a hot spring with sulphur.
You will spend the night in the same hotel as the day before.

Day 04. Ijen trekking – Ketapang/Bali

Departure Bondowoso: if you would like to see the famous blue flames, you will have to depart around midnight. It takes 2 hours to arrive at Paltuding from where your hike starst to Ijen crater lake. Your local guide is waiting for you. He will bring you gas masks that you will need.

Departure Sempol: you will depart at around 02.00 am to see the blue flames as this phenomenon is only vissible during the night. Your local guide is waiting for you in Paltuding, where you start your 3 km hike.

It takes about an hour to trek the 3 kilometers to the top, as the slope is quite steep. On the edge of the crater you can enjoy a colorful panorama over the lake. At the same time many sulphur miners have one of the hardest jobs in the world. They carry about 80 kg on their shoulders while hiking up the crater rim and down the slopes of Mt. Ijen.
Once back at the parking area, don't forget to visit the sulphur weighing station just behind the parking lot. The miners weigh their sulphur and get paid. Have a cup of coffee or tea and maybe a local snack before continuing your tour. En route to Ketapang harbor, you still have time to visit the sulphur factory in Licin village where sulphur is purified and packed.

Estimated time of arrival in Ketapang: around 12.00 noon
Estimated time of arrival in Bali: around 15.00 - note that Bali time is one hour ahead of Java time
