Day 01. Surabaya (airport/hotel) – Ijen area

You will be picked up at Juanda International Airport Surabaya or at your hotel in Surabaya. It is approximately a four hour drive to Pasir Putih, where you have lunch (not included) at a beach side restaurant. After lunch you continue to drive for another 3 hours to the village Sempol (Ijen area), where you stay for the night. You have time to explore the surroundings and spend some leisure time in the hotel if you like. There is, among others, a hot spring in the area.

If you spend the night in Bondowoso city, the drive is about an hour shoter.

Day 02. Ijen trekking – Ketapang/Bali

Departing Sempol: your driver will be ready at around 01.00 am. He will bring you to Paltuding. A local guide is waiting for you with your gas mask. He will escort you to the crater lake.

Departing Bondowoso: you will start around midnight if you would like to see the blue fire. In about 1.5 hours you will reach Paltuding, where your guide is waiting for you.

If you don't wish to see the blue fire, you can discuss with your driver what time will be convenient to depart to Ijen crater lake. But, that still will be quite early morning as smoke emission containing sulphur is increasing during the day.

Paltuding is the point where your hike to the Ijen crater lake starts. It takes over one hour to trek the 3 km to the Ijen crater lake. To see the blue fire you will have to hike down into the crater of the active volcano Ijen, as it is here where one can see the incredible flames. When the sun is about to rise, you can enjoy a colorful panorama at the crater rim. At the same time sulphur miners with a weight of around 80 kg on their shoulders hike up the crater rim. Once at the rim, they put their loads on a "trolley" and wheel them down the slopes of mount Ijen to the weiging area.
When you have experienced the beauty of the active volcano Ijen, you can hike down the slopes back to your car. Once back at the car you can visit the sulphur weighing area just behind the parking lot. Sulphur miners get together to weigh their loads and to get paid. Meet your driver to have a cup of coffee with a local snack, before heading in the direction of the harbor in Ketapang. En route, you can visit the coffee plantation Kalibendo and Jagir waterfall. Hereafter we drive you to the harbor, to catch the ferry to Bali or we can drop you in Surabaya.

Estimated time of arrival in Ketapang: around 12.00 noon
Estimated time of arrival in Bali: around 15.00, note that Bali time is one hour ahead of Java time
